SMRT to raise fares?
This must be the year of the ever increasing public transport fares.

Every year or so, our public transport operators raise their fares but this is the first year in my memory where all sources of public transport providers are thinking abt raising their fares. First, our cab operators decide to raise their fares and now the train and bus operator?

I know that oil prices are soaring but in recent years these operators have been raking in more profits, so what's there to justify this hike in fares except to maintain their soaring profit margins even though they can probably afford to ride this out for a little while longer?

Yes, large corporations are concerned with their pocket linings but what about the consumers? Are they trying to drive us back to the ancient age of WALKING to school/work/the mall/everywhere?

If only it were a government-led initiative to get people to lose weight, I can only hope the PTC doesn't approve of this hike (but they probably will). My $15 in my farecard can barely last a week's travelling without getting a top-up. With the fare hike, I'd have to top it up twice a week? For goodness sake!

Welcome to Singapore, the place where our cost of living goes up faster than we can say "let me think how to rebudget my allowance so that it actually lasts". Cinema ticket fees up, taxi fares up, bus fares up, train fares up, GST rates up. What next?

I'm a 3rd year student in what is probably the largest autonomous university in Singapore majoring in a Science-related subject (well it sorta IS SCIENCE). I'm known to be introverted, sarcastic (at times), funny when I rant (which isn't a good thing lol) and somewhat of a loner. I miss LA and would move there in a heartbeat :(
