It was a freaky morning for me today.
I went to school early, thinking that I would get some studying done before the IRO meeting at 11am. Thinking that I would get some breakfast, eat it in the canteen before going into the library to study. I sat down at a table and starting eating my chicken pie and sipping my cup of Milo.
The next thing I heard was a loud "thunggg..." (the sound of something hitting metal, hard!).
And then this black feathering mass with some white streaks dropped from the ceiling and onto the ground, some 2-3m away from me.
Initially, I thought the bird was probably eating something, curiosity got the better of me and I poked my head out for a look.
So the bird wasn't trying to eat something, it was struggling on the ground, dying. 2-3m away from me.
I decided I wasn't going to stare at some poor bird that had decided to fly straight into one of the overhead metal beams, possibly cracking its skull and spine, and then struggle before dying. I looked away and then took a breath, gathered my belongings and left.
I wasn't so sure it was the right thing to do, but it was weird to have a dead bird in the middle of a canteen and I was well... disoriented. Strange. I've never seen anything that's a Deuterostome (Class Ave, Neognathae, now you know I've studied too hard) actually die in front of me.
It brings a new twist to being bird brained though. Why would you fly yourself straight into a metal beam? I can say I met a kamikaze bird today, though I have no idea what it was trying to take out; the canteen structure, that one metal beam or me... hmmm
