My brain is most definitely not working right now. I just spend the last 3 hours and 30 minutes drafting my philosophy essay and I'm not even sure if it's decent. I hope it is.

Oh yes, the main reason why I came on to blog.

Most people here, in fact everyone, should know that I live, reside in and was born in Singapore right? Singapore, an Asian country where we're supposed to have equality of opportunities for the 2 sexes right? The key word here is 'supposed' because everyone knows it doesn't really exist. On most levels, yes, but not ALL levels.

Anyway, on Monday, I was having my Economics tutorial class and my teaching assistant (TA) is this Chinese (meaning from China) student here to do his PhD. PhD, mind you. PhD.

And he taught the class the wrong concept.

He admitted that he doesn't know how to do our tutorial question (and I'm taking an introductory Economics class at the undergraduate level), doesn't know how to derive some formulae, can only derive formulae using extensive differentiation when you can rationalise it out (my observation) and knows nuts about the concept of price elasticity of demand (PED).

Any self-respecting economics student, even at the junior college level, can tell you that when demand is price elastic, total revenue rises as price fall and when demand is price inelastic, total revenue falls as price falls.

This PhD TA told us that total revenue rises when price falls when demand is price INELASTIC. I almost fell off my chair, amazed at his stupidity.

Ok, at that point, I didn't think of him as stupid nor sexist, YET.

So he asks the class how we got our (correct) answer because he doesn't know how to do the question.

No one answers, so out of the goodness of my heart, aided by my sheer desire not to get infected by his stupidity and my anxiousness to end the tutorial, I told him the answer.

I said:

--> when demand is price inelastic, a fall in price would lead to be smaller than proportionate increase in quantity demanded (for example, a 10% fall in price will lead to a 2% increase in quantity demanded)
--> Hence the fall in total revenue due to the fall in price would be more than the increase in total revenue caused by the increased in quantity demanded since quantity demanded increased by a smaller percent than the percentage fall in price
--> Fall in Total Revenue (caused by price fall) > Rise in Total Revenue (caused by increase in quantity demanded)
--> NET reduction in total revenue
--> lower consumer expenditure

And then he said to me, in front of the entire freaking class,

"No, no, no, no, no.... I already proved last week that when PED is inelastic, total revenue rises when price falls... I don't know if you were here last week but I already showed it."

At that point in time, I was infuriated and wanted to snatch his marker and invade his tutorial class as it was evident that he was too intellectually inferior to teach an introductory course on Economics.

Now I'm not brilliant, but I know what I know (most of the time). And my economics is pretty strong, ok? So I didn't need some dubious PhD student from China, who came from some university that no one has ever heard of (I wouldn't be surprised if its one of those $700 degrees that people buy off the net), telling me I was wrong about a concept I'm 200% sure I was right.

I figured since he was soooooooo intent on teaching the class the WRONG thing, I'd let him, and be responsible if his classes screw up for this module.

Barely 5 minutes later, another male student from my tutorial classes told him of the mistake he made, the same mistake that I told him about, PLUS explanation. Obviously the guy just said the final conclusion w/o ever explaining. And you know what? The idiot actually praised the guy!

"Oh... ya..ya.. you're correct *erases his mistake on the board*"

Sexist little Chinese moron!

Just because I'm female means I'm no good at economics? If I were an Economics major, I'd be 20 times better than he is (at least!).

Who has ever heard of a PhD student who doesn't even understand basic concept? I haven't just heard one, I saw one!

So there you have it. In a prominent university in Singapore, we have SEXIST LITTLE PHD MORONS running about, with DUBIOUS QUALIFICATIONS, teaching undergraduates the wrong thing!

It's always better to be a man, because the sexist moron will laud everything you say as correct..

He must have some serious issues with all women, or maybe just smart women. I have issues with ALL sexist men.

P.S. In case you were wondering, I rolled my eyes at him throughout the rest of the tutorial, ESPECIALLY whenever he turned to look in my direction.

I'm a 3rd year student in what is probably the largest autonomous university in Singapore majoring in a Science-related subject (well it sorta IS SCIENCE). I'm known to be introverted, sarcastic (at times), funny when I rant (which isn't a good thing lol) and somewhat of a loner. I miss LA and would move there in a heartbeat :(
