Kong...
I have a confession to make. Despite joining my classmates in making jibes at how corny we thought it was to see King Kong fight T-Rexes in school for MONTHS after seeing the trailer, I caught King Kong yesterday. Yes, I caught King Kong on the opening day itself, and even resorted to BOOKING tickets. Don't murder me for it. Ok?

I had to see it for myself what the hype is about when it comes to a partcular giant silverback gorilla. Also, I don't deny the fact that sometimes, I watch movies to look at the special effects (yes, I can be queer in that sense). Plus, I wasn't about to pass on an outing with YOU =P

Anyway, Kong more or less blew me away, corny or not (haha). Yes, I admit it, and I eat my words, I did enjoy watching the movie. Even felt a tear build up at the corners of my eyes as Kong died. Ahah, but no, it didn't come down (you were hoping, weren't you?=P)

The beginning was slow, but will give you (I'm assuming most people haven't watched it yet) a good introduction to the characters, in particular Ann Darrow and the crazy director guy whose name I can never remember. Come on, the only names I do remember are Ann's and Kong's.

I was tickled to see "Singapore" mentioned quite a number of times. Sorry, I find it amusing that people would try to draw actors and actresses into shooting a movie at some exotic location named SINGAPORE? Refresh my memory please, but since when in the 1930s was Singapore mildly attractive for film making?

Fast forward to the island (named SKULL Island). The natives were really freaky, they are ok=P. For a moment, I thought they were cannibals. Ok, I STILL think they are cannibals. You probably won't get how freaky they are till you watch the show, but seeing them sent shivers down my spine.

Ann is then as expected, captured and sacrificed to the ape, who waves her violently around as he travels all over the place, which surprised me that she didn't die from all the waving (lol) and surprised YOU that she didn't even cry. Then again, I maintain that sometimes, all that shock can send you into a stupor until it stops, rendering you momentarily emotionless. Trust me, when I got hit by a car, it didn't occur to me to cry. I got up and walked off the road.(I only cried when I sat down lol, dumb, I know) So yes, shock can erm make people behave strangely. But I do agree that she probably should have cried as she was being sacrificed or after Kong put her down.

And one more thing. How did Kong's species get decimated till only 1 is left? For something that powerful, you'd think that there would be quite a few around. Unless by a sad stroke of luck, no females were born (genetic drift?).

I still find the dinosaurs CORNY. Plus, I never knew that T-Rexes work together, but apparently, in the movie they did. I do think that T-Rexes DO NOT work together though. And apparently dinosaurs aren't very bright (maybe except veloceraptors). Why would 3 T-Rexes fight a giant silverback gorilla (going to all that trouble) just to eat one PUNY human? WHat? Ann Darrow is their equivalent of foie gras? o.O Wouldn't it have been easier for them to try eating... say the brontosaurus? Plus it's pretty obvious from Kong's scar on his back that it isn't his first encounter with them, shouldn't they have learnt from experience that it's not a very bright idea to face off with an angry and protective giant silverback gorilla?

One thing I do admit is that I find Kong endearing. It was obvious how amused he was at Ann's antics and how heartbroken he was as he was passing out and being captured, yet still trying to reach out to Ann, but never reaching her. His desperation in New York after breaking free, the need to protect Ann. Hahaha, the guy acting as Kong probably did a better job than all of the other actors. And I still dislike the director (no, not the real one). I guess the actor did a good job at playing a character that is so hate-able.

Overall, I guess I'll give Kong 3.5 bananas out of 5 =)

Location: Singapore, Singapore, Singapore

I'm a 3rd year student in what is probably the largest autonomous university in Singapore majoring in a Science-related subject (well it sorta IS SCIENCE). I'm known to be introverted, sarcastic (at times), funny when I rant (which isn't a good thing lol) and somewhat of a loner. I miss LA and would move there in a heartbeat :(
