I'm back from watching Superman Returns. I have to say I was impressed. There are spoilers ahead so if you're keen on watching the movie, you might want to skip this.
Superman Returns basically starts off 5 years after Superman disappears after astronomers think they've discovered the ruins of his home planet, Krypton. In his leave of absence, everyone, including Lois Lane, moves on. After those 5 long years, he returns and finds that Lois is now a mother with a significant other. Of course, he does the usual saving people in need of help thing. Lex Luther is still evil and finds a way to create new land(in the process sinking already existing continents). He of course does things his way and tries to kill the superhero. Everything of course ends the way it always does, happily ever after.
One thing for all superficial and shallow ladies out there, this Superman is dashing. Yes, DASHING. He is handsome and he is swoon-worthy. On a slightly deeper level, we get to experience Superman on a deeper level than in the comic books. In the comic books (and the cartoons), he comes across as a rather 2 dimensional character who triumphs over everything. In the movie, the angst and disappointment of Clarke Kent when he discovers Lois has moved on in his absence is present. The scene where he sees his son after realising Lois' son is in fact HIS son is rather touching. He comes across as more human and more fragile after having to struggle and nearly sacrificing his life to save the world. Of course, there's that look he shot the guy who tried to shoot him in the eye. PRICELESS. LOVED IT.
On top of that, the movie is action packed with Superman trying to save a space shuttle, a passenger airliner, Metropolis from destruction, the world from Lex Luther, Lois Lane and her family from certain death.
Hence, as a whole package, I'd give Superman 4 doughnuts out of 5. It's good, but I'm not going to give it full marks 'cause there's always room for improvement. After X-Men, X-Men 2 and Superman Returns, Bryan Singer really ought to make comic book adaptations his niche.
I'm a 3rd year student in what is probably the largest autonomous university in Singapore majoring in a Science-related subject (well it sorta IS SCIENCE). I'm known to be introverted, sarcastic (at times), funny when I rant (which isn't a good thing lol) and somewhat of a loner. I miss LA and would move there in a heartbeat :(
