Memoirs of a Geisha (spoiler alert)
Work got a lot better recently, because there were LESS trainings and more proper work to do. And my work keeps coming from ONE person, who isn't the manager I'm under. He happens to handle clients who are under my manager's portfolio. What LUCK! Let's call the guy who keeps giving me work... V.

SO starting Thursday, V has been giving me work to do. Handling the creation of projects on tracker and on the individual tax systems as well as filing. And on Friday, V mentioned that he was going to be around for half a day, and inside I started celebrating. "What?!?!? No WORK!!! Yay!!!". Ok, so I was dreaming. In the end, my manager herself plus some other guy (M) in the office gave me more work to do. And I had to to go up to a different floor to help them with the stock taking. Not to mention that company's employees (client company) that I'm supposed to be creating projects for are still having stickers pasted on their individual files.

Hence, tomorrow, when I go in, I have to:

1. Create projects on the individual tax system
2. Open new sub-files for the YA 2006 (Year of Assessment, which really means Income year of the year before, hence YA06= Income Year 05)
3. Re-organise the control files

And that's not even including new work that will come in tomorrow. Dead, but not quite dead.

Anyway, after work on Friday, I went to Marina Square. Ok, YOU met me at the platform of the train station and Elaine left me that "Oh...Phoebe's boyfriend..." look. Never mind!!! Lol.

We tried Carl's Jr. My first time there. And I can't remember what we had. We had the chicken salad, some fries and this HUGE burger with LOTS of mushrooms. NICE. Too much. But NICE. And then we had tiramisu at The Coffee Connoiseur(frankly speaking, I'm not too sure of the spelling). Before dessert, we walked around, and YOU talked to YOUr friends (too popular, did you know how many people YOU saw that YOU know?!?!?!). Looked at bags (YOU're trying to add variety.. hahaha.. ok.. I'm a bag person so I don't mind). Bought chapstick (YOU bought it for me hahah) and mopiko (some local medicine for mosquito bites, works a lot better than calamine lotion).

Saturday.....nothing much really. Other then my review for Memoirs of a Geisha!

Caught the sneak preview of it close to midnight with YOUr friends. So I was in a group of 11 (nightmare.... My largest movie going outing was only with 5 people).

Anyway, having read the book just weeks before, I must say I am disappointed at how the movie turned out. The scriptwriters changed parts of the book. Parts they change (from my memory):

1. I don't remember Chiyo being taken from her parents in such a frightful way. I think she thought she was going to be adopted by Mr Tanaka and was really looking forward to seeing Mr Tanaka.

2. I was disappointed that the director failed to include the first meeting between Chiyo and Hatsumomo. The one where Hatsumomo called Chiyo 'garbage' when Mr Bekku brought Chiyo to the okiya.

3. The night Chiyo ran to find Satsu, from my recollection, was the night she went to deliver Hatsumomo's instrument. She wasn't following Hatsumomo to the teahouse, holding the umbrella to shield Hatsumomo from the rain. And at Tatsuyo,Chiyo was helped by someone working in the brothel and didn't just chance upon Satsu (how convenient).

4. I was disappointed at how the director failed to include Granny's death in the movie as that was a turning point in Mameha taking notice of Chiyo and subsequently taking Chiyo under her wings.

5. The scene where Mother announces her intention to adopt Sayuri (Chiyo) as her daughter was too..convenient. I remember the book mentioning something about Pumpkin running to Hatsumomo for help, and not both Hatsumomo and Pumpkin being present when Mother announced her intentions.

6. Sayuri and Hatsumomo didn't fight over the hankerchief. They fought over Sayuri's diary, Sayuri subsequently found the ornament Hatsumomo accused her of stealing years ago and exposes Hatsumomo in the book.

7. I don't remember reading the part about Hatsumomo setting the okiya on fire. Then again, it could have been in there. Plausible.

8. I remember Sayuri said something to offend Nobu at the sumo match. Not reflected in the movie.

9. The other man Sayuri slept with on the island... I don't recall him to be American.

Other misgivings I had about the show.

1. The final scene at the teahouse really looked like some pavillion in the Japanese Gardens of some country.

2. The dance... wait.. you call that a dance? Maybe the Japanese do. I didn't see how it was a dance though.

3. The young Chiyo looked so much prettier than the adult Chiyo. Pretty girl, I must add.

4. No mention of Sayuri's first danna who helped the okiya quite a bit in the early years of the war.

5. The kimonos sounded a lot more attractive in the book.

6. THe movie failed to explain how the Chairman was responsible for Chiyo becoming a geisha. (THe chairman told Mameha to take in a girl with blue-grey eyes if she came across this girl. Mameha came across her at the funeral. And you know the rest of the story)

Nevertheless, the movie was decently shot. Although I thought the script could have been better. Out of 5, I would probably rate it a 3. Could have been so much better.

I'm a 3rd year student in what is probably the largest autonomous university in Singapore majoring in a Science-related subject (well it sorta IS SCIENCE). I'm known to be introverted, sarcastic (at times), funny when I rant (which isn't a good thing lol) and somewhat of a loner. I miss LA and would move there in a heartbeat :(
