I made brownies!! From scratch! All by myself!

Side shot of my brownies. I haven't exactly tasted it yet, except for the crumbs that fell off during the cutting. Tastes fine... I think.. I'm not sure how the brownie, when taken as an entire piece, would taste like though. *Prays* Posted by Picasa

Upclose look of the brownies from the side. This one doesn't look so nice because of that indentation (it's not really a hole). The one above looks nicer. That's my best shot, I reckon. Posted by Picasa

This photo is a little blurred because yours truly wasn't born with steady hands. My hands have always been the shaky sort. And it's rather obvious that the cutting was done by an amateur (ME). Pardon the bad cutting. Posted by Picasa

Not-so-appetising look of the brownies. The light in the dining room was a little..funky... Posted by Picasa

The song makes me miss someone..
I've been listening to This Never Happened Before continuously (yes, the defected version) and the more I listen to it, the more I miss the currently-non-existent boyfriend. 5 days w/o talking to each other. I wonder if I'd last 5 months (hmmm...)

For now, I am going to start listening to other songs (and the occasional This Never Happened Before because it is such a beautiful song). I reckon the boyfriend doesn't even notice that I've been missing (for now, it'd probably take an orbituary to appear on the front page of every major newspaper in the country for him to take notice). I'll just see how long the 'homo-sapien-girlfriend-doesn't-exist' thing will last.

The Lake House (Spoiler Alert)
I caught the Lake House today, it was an impromptu decision by Teresa, Eng Hooi and me. Lol, the funny thing is despite being great friends for over 2 years, this is the first time we've caught a movie together. Anyway, Teresa and I wanted to watch the Lake House (rather badly lol) and so we did. We sauntered into the theatre at 4.40pm and caught it.

I guess I was in the mood for something really sappy and romantic and I have to say I enjoyed it A LOT. Thinking about the plot and well, the movie in general, leaves this smile on my face. One of the sweetest and most romantic films I can remember. And yes, I am sitting here, right in front of my computer, listening to a cocked up version of This Never Happened Before by Paul McCartney (there's a blip in the centre of the song, I can't find a decent version) which happens to be the theme song of the movie, as I'm typing this. And I have this silly smile just thinking of the movie. It's great, it really is.

I find the song, This Never Happened Before, awfully romantic. Just check out the lyrics:

I'm very sure, this never happened to me before
I met you and now I'm sure
This never happened before

Now I see, this is the way it's supposed to be
I met you and now I see
This is the way it should be

This is the way it should be, for lovers
They shouldn't go it alone
It's not so good when you're on your own

So come to me, now we can be what we want to be
I love you and now I see
This is the way it should be
This is the way it should be

This is the way it should be, for lovers
They shouldn't go it alone
It's not so good when you're on your own

I'm very sure, this never happened to me before
I met you and now I'm sure
This never happened before (This never happened before)
This never happened before (This never happened before)
This never happened before (This never happened before)
This never happened before

Sweet, isn't it? I thought so too. I really want to have it on mp3 but the only one I can seem to find from websites all have this blip in the centre of the clip.

Anyway, spoiler alert. The movie's about a pair of lovers who communicates to each other through a time-travelling mailbox. Yes, once you get over the lapse in logic, you'll find that it's really a beautiful movie. Kate is a doctor living in 2006 who's just moved out of the lake house to take up a job in Chicago. Alex is an architect living in 2004 who receives Kate's note in the mailbox in which she asks Alex to forward her mail to her new address. They somehow realise that they're living in different times and try to meet, only that Alex fails to meet Kate at the designated restaurant in 2006. Kate tries moving on, Alex doesn't give up and continues writing. Alex moves out of the lake house and into Kate's apartment (remember, Kate lives 2 years after Alex), leaves Kate a present in her future apartment. She finds them. Kate moves on and hires an architect and that architect happens to be Alex's brother (that's in 2008). She sees Alex's drawing and enquires about him, only to find out that he's killed on Valentine's Day in 2006 and she was there, and tried to resuscitate him. She finally gets the epiphany and understands why he didn't make their date (he was already dead) and rushes to the magical mail box to try to save him. Meanwhile, back in 2006, Alex realises why he didn't make the date as well (as she mentioned in a prior letter that she saw someone get killed on Valentine's Day on 2006). Kate waits by the mail box on 14 Feb 2008 where she tells Alex to meet her in the life-saving note and he waits 2 years and makes it. Our 2 leads finally meet. And there you have it, the happy ending.

I guess if you're in the mood for something romantic, this would be the film for you. Out of 5 stars, I'd give it 4. Yes, I was in the mood for something romantic, and I wasn't disappointed. I only wanted to sever the vocal chords of the secondary school kiddies who were torturing me with their live commentaries and explanations to their dense schoolmates of the plot.

Anyway, if anyone manages to find a nice version of the song This Never Happened Before (or even better, the soundtrack), please be kind and inform me. Thank you!

I Suspect...
that the boyfriend's been playing too much computer games. Lol. Some 4 days after he reinstalled the SIMS 2, the university and nightlife expansion packs, and then added on the business expansion pack, I haven't seen him online in well.. 4 days???

Yes, he officially has a new girlfriend, and her name's the SIMS 2. Guys..*rolls eyes*.

I'll be nice and cut him some slack because he works (and I don't, mainly because I enter and start university in 2 weeks) and can only play at night and over the weekends. I can play all day long if I want to, but I haven't been doing that because I've been away at a chalet for the entire day on Monday and Tuesday and I was out today with my ex-colleagues (from my 5 month stint at a rather renowned auditing firm). Tomorrow, I'm returning to my junior college (where I suffered for 2 years) AND meeting my buddies from junior college. Friday... I'm off to the university for some briefing, might take all day too.

I don't feel the urge to really get involved in the game, probably because I've already pushed one business to the top (but it's still in deficit, that will be my next goal; to get it out of the red).

Anyway, next week will be interesting, with Matriculation Day on Tuesday (1 August 2006), declaration of my major by noon the next day and then bidding on the 3rd and 4th. On the 7th, (the Monday after next week), I'm off to school for Week 0 of my first semester (I personally hate the ideas of week zeroes, why must we start at zero? Can't we start at one as most normal people do? Why zero? The last 2-3 years of my school life in uniform was spent having week zeroes as well, whatever happened to the traditional starting-the-new-school-year-with-week-one? It's almost as if I'm back in that uniformed group when I was in secondary school where our seniors were sadistic enough to make us recount our push-ups from zero, yes to include zero in our counts, whenever they were dissatisfied).

I just spotted this on the ChannelNewsAsia website:

PTC Chairman says timing of new service standards for buses not linked to fare issue
By Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 26 July 2006 1555 hrs

SINGAPORE: Public Transport Council Chairman Gerard Ee says the announcement of new service standards for buses was not meant as a precursor to any possible fare increases next month, and that the timing was merely coincidental.

"We can choose to do whichever piece of the work first but there is a certain logic to it - some will interpret it as a sweetening of the pill - but imposing standards is a priority and the question of fares will come later on," said Mr Ee.

He did add, however, that operational efficiencies, which include incidents like the recent NorthEast Line stoppage, will be taken into consideration when looking at any applications for fare increases. - CNA /dt

And then I'm thinking that these despicable public transport operators can simply widen the frequency from 5-35mins to 5-60 minutes just so that the frequency by which their buses come won't deviate by more than 5 minutes from the stipulated frequency. People have despicable ways of dealing with things. I live at the extreme eastern corner of the island and my university is almost at the extreme western end. I need a good 105mins (if I'm lucky, 120 if I'm not) to get to the campus. Bus fares are going up, train fares are going up. Taxi fares have ALREADY gone up. University tuition fees are FOREVER going up. Movie ticket prices are up. The only thing NOT going up is my allowance, I bet it'll still be that $5/day that I've been getting since I was 13. $5 a day as my daily allowance, I'll need more than that just to cover transport. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) must be jumping by the truckload instead of the mere 1++% that we're always led to believe.

I find it unbelieavable that when the price of everything (including groceries and medical bills) increase so substantially, the CPI only increases by a minute percent. It doesn't feel like 1% to be, it feels more like 10%! On Monday, I topped up my fare card to $15 and I came home today with only about $7 left in it. And I haven't been doing much travelling, I haven't been venturing to the other corners of the island. $8 for 6 bus rides and 1 train ride. Maybe it's cheap in some other countries, but I'm starting to feel the pinch because I used to be able to go EVERYWHERE and pay 45 cents for a bus/train ride regardless of the distance I travel because I was a student. I've started calculating which methods are the cheapest ways to get from A to B. Oh well....

I am off to bed now, it's past 11pm even though the HORRIBLE weather has rendered me an insomniac. I lie in bed for hours, tossing and turning in frustration from the humidity. My airconditioner is down, I shut the windows when it gets too late (because it's the Hungry Ghost Festival and I am superstitious enough to think that something will fly in in the middle of the night, not to mention I heard 2 rather monstrous shrieks from outside my bedroom window when I reside on the 3rd floor just 2 nights back and I am still rather freaked out by it), the fan's not strong enough. And when I do sleep, I can't seem to sleep for more than 4 hours at a stretch. I feel asleep at close to 2am this morning, woke up at 3++am and ended up watching a rerun of the Ellen Degeneres (is that how I spell her name?) show and slept past 4am, only to wake up a little before 8am, and then got a negligible amount of sleep before the alarm clock went off. So yes, I am going to bed to try to get some sleep. Hopefully tonight will be a more restful night.

Phoebe

P.S. I'm supposed to plan the date for this weekend, with the boyfriend going MIA, I suppose I can skip that one now. *Chuckles*

I am NOT interesting!
I recently came to a conclusion that not only do most people find me boring, I am so boring that even market research groups find me BORING.

Lol. An hour ago, I received a call from a market research suryevor surveying the lifestyles of Singaporeans (or did she say youths? Never mind). And in that survey, I was only posed one question (although I think she would have asked more had I answer her differently).

She asked me "What kind of magazines have you read in the past 6 months?" My response?

"Other than the 8 Days, only the National Geograhic and Newsweek."

Surveyor: "Oh, okay... Thank you. Bye."

Wow, that was absolutely the shortest survey I have even done.

Telemarketers and surveyors should just form their own network of "people to cheat into buying stuff/doing surveys", and on that list, I could fall under the category of "So boring it's not worth your while to even try".

Just because I don't read trashy magazines means I'm not good enough for such surveys, which is probably a good thing 'cause I don't have to spend my time inflating the egos of the useless companies that actually come up with such meaningless things.

In essence, I'm a boring person and I probably intend to stay boring so that I don't get pulled in to do meaningless things like this.

And just to end things on a happier note, I bought Neil Humphrey's latest book, Final Notes from a Great Island. This shouldn't take long to finish. And the 2nd cover of his first book, Notes from an Even Smaller Island, looks waaaaaaay better than the first cover of that same book. Damn.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to read my new book. And did I mention I bought a new wallet? Adding that with how much I spent on the book, I'm a good $45 poorer. Ouch.

SMRT to raise fares?
This must be the year of the ever increasing public transport fares.

Every year or so, our public transport operators raise their fares but this is the first year in my memory where all sources of public transport providers are thinking abt raising their fares. First, our cab operators decide to raise their fares and now the train and bus operator?

I know that oil prices are soaring but in recent years these operators have been raking in more profits, so what's there to justify this hike in fares except to maintain their soaring profit margins even though they can probably afford to ride this out for a little while longer?

Yes, large corporations are concerned with their pocket linings but what about the consumers? Are they trying to drive us back to the ancient age of WALKING to school/work/the mall/everywhere?

If only it were a government-led initiative to get people to lose weight, I can only hope the PTC doesn't approve of this hike (but they probably will). My $15 in my farecard can barely last a week's travelling without getting a top-up. With the fare hike, I'd have to top it up twice a week? For goodness sake!

Welcome to Singapore, the place where our cost of living goes up faster than we can say "let me think how to rebudget my allowance so that it actually lasts". Cinema ticket fees up, taxi fares up, bus fares up, train fares up, GST rates up. What next?

Flavor of ice cream or tofutti: I can't choose. Macadamia from Haagen Daz/Vanilla ice cream/Raspberry Ripple
Mode of transportation: Of course the car
Music: Anything that sounds nice
Food: Pasta, fish, noodles, ok.. I LOVE my carbohydrates

Earliest childhood memory: Seeing a lizard in the canteen in kindergarten where the entire kindergarten of kids proceeded to surround the poor lizard
Favorite Drink: Iced Lemon Tea
Favorite Snack: Ice cream? Chocolates?
Place to read: On the bed
Most annoying: Being too hot to go to sleep. The boredom.
How I handle the heat: I used to turn on the aircon to cool the room before turning it off and going to bed (sleeping with the air con on gives me really bad sinuses) now I simply leave the window wide open and hope that the wind will do its part (it often doesn't)
Pet Peeve: Lizards *eek*, the humidity
Mistake for which no one in my family will ever forgive you: My family blames me for everything, I can't be bothered to think

Most romantic: How romantic can it be to live in an equatorial nightmare where it's hot AND humid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year? But it was pretty romantic sitting on a bench right in front of the beach (discounting the gross looking sea water, where's my white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters?)
Summer movie: Action movies. Romance flicks. Summer blockbusters.

A Shoe Love Story, RIGHT!!!

See the pair of shoes above *points*? Those are my latest pair of shoes.

The strange thing about these shoes is that I saw them almost 4 months ago in a departmental store in People's Park (Chinatown) and WANTED to get them. My mum then tells me I've got too many pairs of shoes at home (at that point in time, I had 6 pairs, that's a lot????) and forbade me from buying. Less than an hour later, the pair I was wearing at that point in time gave way and I had to get a replacement. Alas, I got another pair because by then, we were already in Tampines (far, far, far, far away from People's Park).

Fast forward to 4 months later, sometime last week. I was out at Tampines with my mother buying new clothes (yes, I have a HUGE clothes haul this Great Singapore Sale) when I spotted this faithful pair of shoes AGAIN. As some of you might know, I've been out scouting the market for a pair of wedges that I like and have narrowed it down to Americaya and Charles & Keith as these were the 2 brands with notable designs. Somehow the Charles and Keith wedges didn't feel comfy and I stuck to Americaya and ended up buying the SAME pair (well, alright design) of wedges I saw at People's Park months ago. Talk about going full circle. Posted by Picasa

Yup, this is the brand of wedges I ended up with.

Did I mention that that particular design has 2 colours; pink, green and blue. I liked the green one since I first saw it on People's Park. Saw the same design again at Parkway about a month after the Chinatown sighting but was told that that outlet only had blue before seeing and getting the green one from Tampines. Posted by Picasa

In the sims 2 OFB, there's a dumb cheat if I should say to guarentee that your sims end up with TWINS. Yes, all those crap about guaranteeing twins in the past? I found something that works for me. I read on the boards that if you feed a pregnant sim with cheesecake, he/she'll get twins. So unlucky me who has never had twins decided to try. And it worked. The result? Twin baby boys (Adrian and Anthony). On top of that, they adopted a baby girl who I named Annabelle. Anyway, here you see baby Adrian celebrating his birthday. Mummy's carrying him =) Posted by Picasa

This shows the inside of the shop. You can see that the first storey is used purely for entertaining the customers with all the shelves of goods (the cash registers are hidden by the 2nd storey). On the 2nd storey, that's the workbench with all my tools needed to bake, make toys, arrange flowers and well construct robots). Yes, the shop sells a nice mixture of flowers, toy robots (I haven't started selling hydrobots and cleanbots even though I can make them because well.. let's just say the shop's kinda small and it takes very long to make the bots) Will expand my repertoire when my shop's more well-established. Right now, I'm 'motherloding' like no one's business and I'm 40K in deficit because of all the renovations and the cost to manufacture the goods plus workers' wages. Most of the time, my sim runs a one woman show when she can but her business (a rank 5) is getting a little too big for her to do that, and her cashier happens to have a gold badge for that cash register and I end up paying him a good $57 per hour.  Posted by Picasa

This is my shop in Bluewater Village, a new shopping district you get by purchasing and installing the OFB Expansion Pack. It's actually "The Corner Shop" to which I've added a 2nd storey and installed lifts (in which my sims proceeded to 'woohoo' in lol) Posted by Picasa

Yooohooo...
Guess what? *bops around*

Lol, I can't believe I came online at this time just to say this (actually I came online to do my last round of checks on my yahoo account and email), I HAVE THE 3RD EXPANSION PACK OF THE SIMS 2!

I have the SIMS 2, the university expansion pack AND the latest addition (it came tonight, courtesy of my mother's company and to a smaller extent, a furniture and electrical appliance store in Singapore), the BUSINESS expansion park (this one is original, just like the game itself). Now I just don't have the Nightlife expansion pack which is a little sad because I don't get to see vampires in the game and my sims can't own cars. But now they get the other perks like have turn-ons and turn-offs plus their own inventory. In addition, my sims can now start a business either from home or from a community lot. I just spent the last 4 hours playing it. I'm still getting the hang of it but I am using my most prolific sim (the one I showed you guys in 2 previous entries). Yup, I got her to maximise ALL 7 skills today. She now has a silver badge in flower arranging. Hopefully she'll get the gold by tomorrow (and I should pop by the shop soon because her inventory has DOZENS and DOZENS of bouquets). And sims can now bake cherry pies and cheesecakes (damn.. cheesecakes..), in addition to the gelatin, baked alaska, santa cookies and layer cakes they have for dessert. I am still trying to figure out most of the aspects of the business game.

And about my new DVDs, did I mention I got the DVDs to season 1 of Grey's Anatomy and Bostom Legal(BL)? I can't remember. Anyway, I'm just 2 episodes short of completing season 1 of BL. Has the US released season 2 yet?

And for you Singaporeans (yes, even Singaporeans who now reside overseas because of their further studies like JX and Shufen), mr brown (mb) has designed 2 t-shirts. Go check them out. My favourite is the Tur Kwa t-shirt. Reminds you of the recent election, doesn't it?

I just had a thought, I wouldn't be surprised if some people suspect that I suffer from bipolar disorder. Just last night, I was all gloomy and melancholic and now I'm almost hyperactive. Weird....

I'm off to bed now because I have a 2.10pm show to catch tomorrow (Pirates of the Caribbean) and I need to be up latest by 10am.

Now if only life were as easy as a game of the SIMS 2
A couple of days ago, I decided to pack a part of my room; namely the writing desk which threatened to topple over due to the combined weight of all (ok, not all) my National Geographic magazines and other little stuff like stationery and notepads. And so I went about my spring cleaning and stumbled upon 3 years' worth of tertiary educational instutions' prospecti (prospectuses? Prospecti??). It was pretty sad, throwing all of them away, knowing I have no use for them as I am condemned into spending at least 3 miserable years in NUS. All that planning came to naught.

In addition, I ended up throwing all of my letters from the UCAS away. All those letters of offer, all those packages from the various universities pitching their cities and institutions, all those 'scholarship' offers from them (partial scholarship). Always knew I wanted to go overseas for the long term, but somehow I just couldn't fulfil it. Of course, I could blame my parents for not wanting to pay when they obviously have the means. I did sit (and still am, I have till August to reply, believe it or not, because the universities keep revising their offers from Conditional to Unconditional) 6 offers from 6 universities for a course I cannot do in Singapore. And then I could blame myself, for not landing the stat board scholarship. And then, I could blame the stat board, for not offering the scholarship (although that would really be stretching it). I know I didn't actively plan my way to an overseas university, but I know I've wanted it since I was in secondary school and it really is a shame for everything to come to an unhappy end, in this way. How pathetic. Now I'm still getting emails from the universities on pre-departure briefings and administrative matters (I'm getting emails from the British Council too). Sigh, if only I were in the position to actually tell them that yes, I would be attending the pre-departure briefing. Only that I can't depart, even though I really want to.

I've had a couple of friends leave for Australia for further studies and I was there personally to send one of them off. The strangest thing is that as I saw her hug her family in tears, I actually thought to myself, if it were me in that position, I'd be sprinting towards the boarding gate. The irony, I see people who would probably give it all to stay here and study here and here I am, wishing I could be the one leaving. Life is cruel.

University starts in approximately 3 weeks and the only reason I'm keen is because I'm bored at home. Other than being ill, I'm bored.

If only life were as easy as a game of the SIMS 2, I wouldn't have to worry because I wouldn't have to think for myself. I wouldn't have to worry about screwing up during the bidding process in university because it doesn't exist in the sims' universities. Life would be so much easier. We live life day to day doing nothing except eat, sleep, watch tv, play musical instruments, go to school/work, work on improving our skills to get that promotion and making sure our friends stay with us. Strangely, it sounds so similar to real life, yet so detached, and so much easier.

Bye Bye My Phone...
My mobile phone's not a complete goner yet, but it's been giving me quite a lot of trouble when I try to charge the battery the past week or two. SO I am finally yielding and will be sending it in for repairs tomorrow (or today for you picky ones), which in turn means I am going to be without my phone (I reckon). Hopefully Motorola will be able to do something about it.

I'm officially ill *coughs*
Yes, after putting up with a persistent dry cough for a week, my illness has finally escalated into a full blown cyanosis-inducing cough.

This is what happens when you have a seriously warped way of thinking and actually heed it! Yup, my 'be merry now and suffer later' attitude popped up and proceeded to have...

Pasta at Breeks
The Oreo Cheesecake from Secret Recipe
Tiramisu, Mudpie and Iced Passion Tea from Coffee Club
A meal from Burger Kind (Mushroom Swiss Double, anyone?)
Xiao Long Baos from Din Tai Fung
Brownie from Billy Bombers

over the last 6 days. In the end, I coughed so badly my throat really hurt and ended up seeing the doctor today. I walked out of the clinic a lot poorer than I had started off, with a bottle of cough mixture, some antibiotics, medication for the phlegm, runny nose and lozenges.

My throat is still being a pain in the you-know-where but hopefully it'll get better in a day or two. Meanwhile, I shall eat lots of soupy stuff, drink lots of water and avoid going out and infecting more people with my illness.

And I went out yesterday with YOUr family and YOUr mother bought me a top. That was strange, weird and quite embarrassing. I wasn't expecting that and I didn't know how to reject her. My goodness. Free top, I know some people will like that idea but it was a little weird. It was a nice gesture nonetheless. I guess it's mainly because I wasn't expecting it.

This was taken on Friday, when I went over to Chek Hui's place to complete Anna's look. Anna is the doll I'm holding. When we bought her, someone had cruelly screwed a 'screw' into her head. We removed that screw and gave her a beautiful head of red hair. Yup, a redhead.  Posted by Picasa

Sometimes I wonder if the existence of a country like Singapore is a mockery.
Just last night, I spent almost 30 minutes criticising Singaporean youths over their lack of the ability to THINK (if anyone asks me how I got my A1 in General Paper last year, my answer would be to 'think'), today I find out that the FATHER of ALL Singaporean bloggers (mr brown,mb) has had his newspaper column at the Today paper suspended. All because he took it upon himself to write a editorial which basically disagreed with what our government is doing (in a comical manner, if I may add). Because of that article, the Ministry of Communication, Information and the Arts (MICA) shot a reply, claiming him to be a partisan player in politics, unconstructive and said that the media has no business to tell the government what's wrong with their policies. What a load of bull.

So pretending to be stupid, I checked up on the meaning of the word 'partisan' and here's what dictionary.com has to say.

par·ti·san1
n.
  1. A fervent, sometimes militant supporter or proponent of a party, cause, faction, person, or idea.
  2. A member of an organized body of fighters who attack or harass an enemy, especially within occupied territory; a guerrilla.

adj.
  1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of a partisan or partisans.
  2. Devoted to or biased in support of a party, group, or cause: partisan politics.

The last time I checked, the article wasn't in favour of ANY political parties. Of course I could be wrong but still, disagreeing with the PAP-dominated government doesn't necessarily translate into playing the grounds for an opposition party, does it? I didn't see mb psyching readers into voting for Party XXX in our next election (which will happen years from now because we've just had an election!).

The government claims that his comments were unconstructive and offer no solutions or alternatives. If we, the civilians, and the press are expected to come up with solutions to every one of our problems, then why would we still need the government? Especially when it comes to fiscal, monetary and all other matters which really should fall under the business of the government.

What is more sad is that after this mini hoo haa, the paper has now suspended mb's column. Break the man's rice bowl for offending the government. It's pathetic how the government should be afraid of the people but the truth works the other way round. It's idiotic how the media in free countries like the USA and the UK are allowed to criticse their governments without fear of repercussions and how the local media here is controlled by the government (some say it's infiltrated lol) and ready to serve the government with a bow on a whimper. The thing is, it now seems as if the Civil Service is bullying a poor man. This man is not like Vendetta, he doesn't blow buildings up. He's just a man on the streets with access to an editorial column. Does that make him any less of a civilian? No. He wasn't brainwashing Singaporeans, he was writing about his own experiences, and it seems that many people actually agree with him. So where's the wrong in that? In coming up with something that people relate to?

The good thing is that RSF has actually picked up this little nugget of news and people will know how this poor man is being intimidated into submission. And that Singaporeans have started rallying around mb. The guy seriously deserves better. For now, I'm waiting to see how things play out. Hopefully it will be in mb's favour but I doubt it....

Youths and their thoughts?
A junior just asked me, a few moments ago, to complete her Project Work survey on the issue of giving youths more avenues to voice their opinions. In return, I somehow managed to give her a 344 word GP-esque answer.

To one of the questions that went: What do you think of the current system for youths to voice their views?

I somehow turned it on its head and made it about youths not being able to think for themselves (Singaporean youths at least).

My answer went along the lines of:

My personal opinion is that there are avenues available for youths to express their views. However, the problem mostly lies with youths who are not thinking for themselves. They don’t challenge themselves or challenge authority. Of course, you might argue that the powers-that-be are stifling the voices of the community, including youths, with all their threats of defamation and all those times in which we’ve seen the Sedition Act been invoked. Another point I like to make is that it seems that the opinions of youths in general, while valid, can be further developed upon, but that rarely happens and we see youths express those points of views in a crude, crass and raw manner. Yes, youths do need more breathing space to air their opinions, but then again, are Singaporean youths mature enough to handle the increased freedom if it’s given to them? A significant portion of youths today seem more interested in mundane day-to-day activities and don’t concern themselves with larger issues, be it international news or even local news.

Another thing to consider would be your definition of youths; how old should they be? 13? 18? 21? 25? 30? A lot of my points made above were made in relation to the far younger crowd who seem apathetic, so apathetic that they might even find it difficult to generate a point of view.

Hence before we consider improving the system, which undoubtedly can be bettered, we should think about getting youths to start thinking critically. Once that has been achieved, then does the whole issue of improving the system through which youths voice their views come into play. On that note, yes, we can afford to have more avenues through which youths can express their views but I don’t think it is really necessary. We can make use of what we have for their views to get across. Things like the Straits Times Forum, the Voices section in Today, or even the Feedback Unit. Youths can voice their views, but whether they will be taken into account is another issue altogether.

Your views, anyone?

Italia! Italia!
Italy won! Yay!

I'm feeling a lot better now, after getting forty winks. The medicine is finally working. Just to be safe and just to make my throat feel better, I'm going to get some lozenges later on.

Of course, I had to jeopardise my health by eating a packet of instant noodles just now. I couldn't help it, there was nothing to really cook and I needed something hot and soupy. 80% of my daily sodium intake? CHECK!

I'm feeling well enough to go out and I'm no longer cranky. Hopefully, I'll recover just in time for my medical check up this Saturday.

Which also means no football for me tonight. Not that I mind, I'm not as interested in the Portugal-France match. I'm done for now.

Now, will you excuse me as I wash up and get ready to go out. =)

I'm ill...
It is official. I feel like CRAP.

Sore throat + a persistent dry cough + a splitting headache = a very cranky and grumpy Phoebe.

Not to mention that I can't concentrate on watching the match.

So far, Italy's the better team, so go Italia! Even better, considering they're playing in a stadium full of German fans. Full of very vocal German fans.

Oh yes, if you tried chatting to me a couple of hours before (say around midnight to 2.50am) and I didn't reply, my apologies. I was napping. Now the nap didn't really do much good. Isn't it obvious? Judging from how horrible I'm feeling. And that's AFTER taking a dosage of cough mixture supposedly meant for dry coughs as well. I've mostly stopped coughing, but the idiotic headache persists!

At the rate I'm going, I won't be able to meet the loonies later today =(

Breeks!
I'm falling ill and it seems to be becoming a trend among my orientation group. Another groupmate's on the verge of falling ill, just like me!

Anyway, today was ok. Went out, had pasta at Breeks at Ngee Ann City. I have to relate this incident here because it was just too amusing and new, given our service standards in Singapore.

Don't get me wrong, I think our service standards, especially in middle-class eateries and above, are pretty fine. Even in our fast food outlets. The staff there greets you, says thank you and have a nice day. Some of them even smile at you. But Breeks took it to a whole new level!

When the 3 girls (Chek Hui, Arsyikin and yours truly) first waltzed into Breeks, there was a coordinated "HELLO! WELCOME TO BREEKS!" from ALL of the staff on duty there. We were seated and given time to decide on our orders after which a waitress (very attentive, I would say, she came almost immediately after we put the menus down and kept relatively quiet)promptly came and took our orders, repeated them and excused herself.

Within 5 minutes, I spotted Chek's SALAD coming out of the kitchen and exclaimed a little too loudly that her salad's almost ready, only to see that the embarrassed chef had hid her salad behind the counter. All our main courses came within 10minutes. A first for most eateries with a reputation like Breeks (a little like Billy Bombers I could say, but I love the milk shakes at Billy Bombers). I remember waiting 45mins for my pasta the last time I was at Swensens!

To cut the story short, as we are, our 'nanny' arrived, ordered a drink for HIMSELF and was promptly served as well. After footing the bill, on our way out of Breeks, we heard another coordinated greeting. This time, it went "THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND HAVE A NICE DAY!". COORDINATED! Every one of them said it, with clock-like precision!

I have to say I was VERY impressed! Polite service staff, quick and prompt service. What else could I ask for? Except they threw in the whole coordinated greeting part. So to tbe staff and management of Breeks at Ngee Ann City, GREAT WORK! *Thumbs up*

Now tomorrow, I will be waltzing into the Orchard Road area (again). This time, I get to see how good the service is at Coffee Bean. Will it be as good? We were at Secret Recipe (Plaza Singapura outlet) and the service was pretty up to standard, except for a mix up in our orders. But man, Breeks really took it over the top, which was good. Lol.

Tonight's World Cup Semi Final match: Italy vs Germany. Go Italy!!!!! (But knowing the jinx that I am, Germany might win, just because I'm supporting Italy).

Know what I said earlier on about not jinxing the Houston thing?

It's off. Lol. And I'm not even surprised. Never trust the family to pull something like that off.

My room feels like an oven. The air conditioner's down. I'm perspiring buckets of sweat (DON'T picture that) and I'm forever feeling sticky. GROSS. It's only a matter of time before I break out in heat rashes. Why does the weather have to be so shitty???

Hello Post Number 350!

My medical check up at the university, originally scheduled to be held tomorrow is now cancelled. Not that it's cancelled cancelled, but I've decided to go private. Apparently, a friend of a friend had to wait 6 hours to get hers done, and I was quite thankful that I was standing outside the clinic with an appointment for Saturday when I got wind of the news. 6 HOURS!?!?!?! Oh my freaking goodness!

Anyway, I will be off to do my university enrolment medical checkup this Saturday morning and the results better be in FAST. Apparently, someone I knew did hers with the same company (but different clinic I reckon) and got hers in 30mins. Mine has to be done pronto, well the results at least, because if things actually work out, I'll be on a plane early Sunday morning.

What? On a PLANE?

Yes, apparently the mother is now trying to pull of a last minute 2 week vacation to Houston where the father will be working. And if it materialises, it means I will freaking miss the WORLD CUP FINALS. Lol. And of course, past experiences have taught me not to expect ANYTHING from my family because 100% of the time, you'll really be disappointed. Lol. So there isn't really a rush to get the medical report except for the fact that I'm a lazy bum and want to get everything done at a shot.

For now, I am not going to jinx the whole Houston thing by talking about it incessantly.

This week is NUTS. I went out just now and found out that my student's travel pass has EXPIRED. In the end, I was made to pay cash though I did do something rather dishonest. I didn't mean to but I didn't have enough change on me.

See, the bus far would cost 60 cents using a pass and 90cents in coins. Since my pass has expired (!?!?!?!), it means that I'd have to pay the full adult cash fare of 90cents. The catch is, I only had 85cents and 'fessed up to the bus captain who then kept insisting that I had enough since my fare was only 55cents (student's fare but since I'm technically in-between schools which doesn't make me a student). To save myself from further embarrassment, I paid 55cents and took a seat. To redeem myself, on the journey home, I paid the full 90cents (actually I didn't have change and paid a dollar).

Other than my now-expired travel concession pass, I'm packed. In a sense that I'm busy. For the next couple of days at least. Tomorrow I will be meeting some campmates to buy some stuff. Wednesday, I'm meeting the other 3 loonies. Thursday I'm finally free. And Friday... we're having a reunion among the campmates. Not to mention the check up on Saturday.

I'm actually quite bored withh nothing to do now. So I'm going to just go off and entertain myself with some games. Cya

Phoebe

P.S. I realised that Pirates of the Carribean opens in cinemas here on 13 July. ARGH... If the Houston thing goes through, I'll only be able to watch it in late July, not mid July. Bummer.

Superman Returns!
I'm back from watching Superman Returns. I have to say I was impressed. There are spoilers ahead so if you're keen on watching the movie, you might want to skip this.

Superman Returns basically starts off 5 years after Superman disappears after astronomers think they've discovered the ruins of his home planet, Krypton. In his leave of absence, everyone, including Lois Lane, moves on. After those 5 long years, he returns and finds that Lois is now a mother with a significant other. Of course, he does the usual saving people in need of help thing. Lex Luther is still evil and finds a way to create new land(in the process sinking already existing continents). He of course does things his way and tries to kill the superhero. Everything of course ends the way it always does, happily ever after.

One thing for all superficial and shallow ladies out there, this Superman is dashing. Yes, DASHING. He is handsome and he is swoon-worthy. On a slightly deeper level, we get to experience Superman on a deeper level than in the comic books. In the comic books (and the cartoons), he comes across as a rather 2 dimensional character who triumphs over everything. In the movie, the angst and disappointment of Clarke Kent when he discovers Lois has moved on in his absence is present. The scene where he sees his son after realising Lois' son is in fact HIS son is rather touching. He comes across as more human and more fragile after having to struggle and nearly sacrificing his life to save the world. Of course, there's that look he shot the guy who tried to shoot him in the eye. PRICELESS. LOVED IT.

On top of that, the movie is action packed with Superman trying to save a space shuttle, a passenger airliner, Metropolis from destruction, the world from Lex Luther, Lois Lane and her family from certain death.

Hence, as a whole package, I'd give Superman 4 doughnuts out of 5. It's good, but I'm not going to give it full marks 'cause there's always room for improvement. After X-Men, X-Men 2 and Superman Returns, Bryan Singer really ought to make comic book adaptations his niche.

Location: Singapore, Singapore, Singapore

I'm a 3rd year student in what is probably the largest autonomous university in Singapore majoring in a Science-related subject (well it sorta IS SCIENCE). I'm known to be introverted, sarcastic (at times), funny when I rant (which isn't a good thing lol) and somewhat of a loner. I miss LA and would move there in a heartbeat :(
